What to Expect on a Guided Fly Fishing Trip

By Mike Sherer

If you are thinking about booking a guided fly fishing trip, it helps to know how the day usually comes together. At Wenatchee Fly Company, guided trips are built around your goals, your experience level, the season, and the water that is fishing best.

Some guests are learning the basics for the first time. Others are experienced anglers looking for a new challenge on the Yakima River, Rocky Ford Creek, the Methow River, Central Washington lakes, or small mountain creeks. The goal is the same either way: a memorable day on the water with local guidance, the right equipment, and a trip plan that fits the conditions.

A Trip Matched to Your Goals

Wenatchee Fly Co offers a variety of guided fishing trips for different skill levels and fishing styles. The main guided trip options include the Yakima River, Rocky Ford Creek, the Methow River, stillwater lakes, mountain creeks, and custom group or corporate events.

The Yakima River is a year-round option and can be fished with float trips or walk-and-wade trips. Rocky Ford Creek is a walk-and-wade sight fishing trip near Ephrata. The Methow River can be fished by float or wade depending on river flows. Stillwater trips focus on Central Washington lakes, while mountain creek trips are a summer and early fall option for small-stream fishing.

What Is Included

A guided trip includes use of the needed fishing gear for the day, such as waders, boots, rods, leaders, tippet, flies, and tackle. Non-alcoholic beverages are included, and full-day trips commonly include lunch. If you have dietary restrictions, let your guide know ahead of time.

More than anything, the trip includes guidance. The guide helps plan around the season, the water, and the species being pursued. On the water, that can mean help with casting, fly selection, presentation, reading water, or adjusting the plan as conditions change.

What You Should Bring

Bring a hat, sunglasses, and a rain coat. Central Washington weather can change quickly, so layers are recommended. In spring, fall, and winter, comfortable layers under waders can make the day better. Wool socks are also recommended for cooler conditions.

In summer, some trips may be warm enough for water shoes such as Chacos or Tevas. Personal items such as extra clothing, rain gear, hats, and sunglasses are not included, so plan to bring what you need for the day.

Licenses, Meeting Details, and Payment

A Washington fishing license is not included with the trip, so guests need to purchase one before fishing. Some boat launches may also require parking passes, and your guide will let you know if one is needed.

Meeting times and locations vary by season, water, and target species. Your guide will reach out a day or two before the trip with the meeting time and location. A deposit is collected when the reservation is made, and full payment is collected on the day of the trip.

Choosing the Right Water

If you want a classic Central Washington river trip, the Yakima River is one of Wenatchee Fly Co's favorite options. If you are excited by clear-water sight fishing for large trout, Rocky Ford Creek may be a better fit. If you want mountain scenery and a seasonal river option, the Methow River is best from mid-June through the end of September.

For lake fishing, stillwater trips can target trout, bass, carp, tiger musky, and panfish depending on the water and season. Mountain creek trips are a good fit for anglers who want to escape summer heat, explore small streams, and fish dry flies for small trout from July through October.
